The Edwards Cattle Ranch is located in the northern hill country of Texas in southwestern Erath County.  We started raising cattle in 1972 with pretty much a “mixed lot of cows” and an angus bull.  We soon moved to a more straight Brangus cow base using Brangus and Hereford bulls.  In the early 1990’s we purchased our first Full blood Fleckvieh Simmental bull and soon realized the value of these cattle when crossed with Brangus and Angus cows.  The first calf crop produced the heaviest and best looking calves we had ever had.  We were hooked.  A few years later we bought two Full blood Fleckvieh Simmental cows and then a few more, and then a few more.  Our first full blood genetics came from Henry Gunster’s herd.  Since then we have added bulls from Group BBBG and Ferme Gagnon in Canada.  We have also used the best AI sires available to improve our cattle.   We now have 25-30 head of Full Fleckvieh Simmental cows, a few Purebred Cows and several SimAngus Cows. We have been infusing polled genetics into our herd the past few years and now have about 40%- 50% polled cattle.  We always keep some commercial crossbred cows around just to show what they look like and can do.

We calve in the spring, March through May.  Our cattle are expected to exist and thrive on the coastal Bermuda grass and native grass pastures that we have.  We do not pamper the cows or creep feed the calves so, the performance they give us should be the performance you can expect to get at your place.   We expect our heifers to calve at 24-27 months of age and all the breeding females are expected to raise a calf. 

Our cattle are expected to be fertile (calving every year), have good feet and legs, be docile, and have good carcass qualities (marbling and tenderness), after all, we are raising beef.  The females are culled if they do not meet our standards.

The bulls we keep for sale are graded and evaluated with the only criterion being, would we want to buy that bull if we were looking for one.  If the answer is not a resounding yes, the calf is castrated, because of that, we don’t have a large number of bulls for sale but the ones we do keep for sale, we feel are superb.  The bulls we sell are raised on grass pastures, without creep feed, therefore protecting their feet and testicles.
